DES KIDS IN THE KITCHEN #YEAR2

Cooking with kids is not just about ingredients, recipes and cooking. It’s about harnessing imagination, empowerment and creativity!

Cooking can help young kids learn and practice some basic math concepts and build language skills. And creating meals can help develop their self-confidence and lay the foundation for healthy eating habits.

25 November International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women It’s time to act : UNiTE! Activism to End Violence against Women & Girls!

This 2022 theme is UNITE! Activism to End Violence against Women & Girls.

4th grade DES on equality.
Today was a big day for us. We started our cycle of lessons on gender equality by figuring out the little things we have all heard around us that feel unequal and disrespectful. Afterwards, we transformed these sayings into words that feel more like us. We thought of how we believed society should be and created an imaginary society we would be proud of. Supporting and investing in kids’ understanding of gender equality is key to a safer, respectful society.

It’s time to act : Voluntary beach cleaning Year 5

The human footprint on seas and coasts is one of the most severe environmental problems. People’s health is threatened, marine life is degraded, and the aesthetics of the landscape is altered. Our students prove once again that they are active citizens by taking action. Beach clean-up is an easy, fun and valuable process, which, together with sorting the litter, allows children to realize the problem up close. Their involvement in ecological actions is a beacon of hope that guides and inspires us all.

The third grade of the DES Primary School welcomes the children of the “Hopscotch” kindergarten. Group challenge: The vegetable garden

As part of our school’s International Baccalaureate programme, the 3rd grade, this year, has taken care of their vegetable garden!
On Friday, November 11, the joy for students & teachers was doubled! The occasion was the visit of the beloved students of the Hopscotch kindergarten to the interactive European school! The students of the 3rd grade took over the tour of our little friends in the school area, and then, they anointed their helpers in the process of taking care of the vegetables in the greenhouse area! No student lacked enthusiasm, dedication, and concentration! The result was genuinely unique, and the collaboration experience was unrepeatable!
DES kitchen garden
The DES Vegetable Garden reminds the students about the true source of our food supply and teaches them valuable gardening and agriculture concepts. They can exercise and improve skills that integrate with other subjects such as Mathematics, Science, Art, Health, Physical Education, and Social Studies, as well as several educational goals such as personal and social responsibility.

World Origami Day 11 November

Origami is a STEAM Engine
Origami is a great way to merge science, technology, engineering, art, and math together: STEAM.

Origami Improves Students’ Skills
Origami, the ancient art of paper folding, has applications in the modern-day classroom for teaching geometry, thinking skills, fractions, problem-solving, and fun science. What do pizza boxes, paper bags, and fancy napkins have in common? Well, you might have guessed it — origami.
Origami, the ancient art of paper folding, is making a comeback. While some of the oldest pieces of origami have been found in ancient China and its deepest roots are in ancient Japan, it can also impact today’s education. This art form engages students and sneakily enhances their skills — including improved spatial perception and logical and sequential thinking.
An Art Form for All Subjects
Researchers have found several ways that origami can entice lessons while giving students the necessary skills. Here are some ways that origami can be used in your classroom to improve a range of skills:

Geometry
Origami has strengthened an understanding of geometric concepts, formulas, and labels, making them come alive. By labelling an origami structure with length, width, and height, students learn key terms and ways to describe a shape. Using origami to determine the area by applying a formula to a real-world structure.
Thinking Skills
Origami excites other modalities of learning. It has been shown to improve spatial visualization skills using hands-on learning. Such skills allow children to comprehend, characterize, and construct their own vernacular for the world around them. In your class, find origami or geometric shapes in nature and describe them in geometric terms.
Fractions
The concept of fractions is scary to lots of students. Folding paper can demonstrate the fractions in a tactile way. In the class, we use origami to illustrate the concepts of one-half, one-third, or one-fourth by folding paper and asking how many folds students would need to make a specific shape.
Problem Solving
Origami allows children to solve something that is not prescribed and enable them to make friends with failure (i.e. trial and error). In the class, show a shape and ask students to create a way to make it. They may get the solution from various approaches. Remember, there is no wrong answer.
Fun Science
Origami is a fun way to explain physics concepts. A thin piece of paper is not very strong, but if you fold it like an accordion, it will be. (Look at the side of a cardboard box for proof.) Bridges are based on this concept. Also, origami is a fun way to explain molecules. Many molecules have the shape of tetrahedrons and other polyhedra.
Bonus: Just Plain Fun!

Pre-Elections @ DES 2022

Somewhere inside of us is the power to change the world. Roald Dahl
In terms of education, School Elections & Voting are excellent means of teaching children some of the fundamentals of Democracy and elections: opinion-forming, campaigning, debating and voting.
We keep voting secret, so children can express themselves honestly (and not fall out with their friends!). We make sure that when the results are announced, there’s no triumphalism, and we encourage honour in victory and defeat.

DES Elections 2022-2023,
We are ready to take action!
We cannot wait till Monday.

FOLK TRADITION-SHADOW THEATRE YEAR 1 IB PYP

The Theater of Shadows, the well-known Greek Karagiozis from the Far East, reached the Balkans and Greece through the Arabs and the Turks. Southeast Asia’s most famous shadow theatres are those of Java, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Bali and Laos. The source of their themes is the tales of Rama, based on two Indian epic poems, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

At the end of the 19th century, the Turkish Karagiozis had become Hellenized and could clearly express the popular Greek soul. Leading karagiozo-players contributed significantly, such as Mimaros in Patras, Antonis Mollas in Athens and Memos in Thessaloniki. Today Karagiozis, despite the adverse – for any traditional art – living conditions, the imposition of mass media and the prevalence of new forms of entertainment intertwined with technological development, continues to participate in the cultural events of Greek society. In contrast, the unique entertainment and its pedagogical character and, of course, its easy uptake by children have contributed to turning it into a spectacle whose primary audience is the minor audience.

One of the unique features of the genre is orality. This element, combined with the fixed morphology and typology, ensures in the Shadow Theater, on the one hand, the contact with tradition and, on the other hand, the immediacy of the communication between the puppeteer and the audience. This improvisational possibility allows this theatre to function pedagogically and to create a climate of immediacy and communication. The lack of specific texts and the codification of the genre leaves considerable room for the thematic modification of traditional drama. Thus this theatre becomes a genre easily accessible to students and able to serve their entertainment needs.
