“Our goal is to conquer the world!”
At DES, every student is distinct, and every student loves learning. Knowledge, skills, abilities, talents, discovery of solutions are some of the most essential characteristics of our students, the future citizens of the world.
Programme

Our programme offers the most advanced methods of knowledge transfer.

DES is a school with a humanitarian, democratic and modern character that cultivates a broader education and perceptions of life.

The educational material is adapted to experiential learning, experiments, discovery, and differentiation, which make learning enjoyable for the children.  The enriched learning procedure, the modern pedagogical methods based on the “International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme”, the “Theory of Multiple Intelligences” (H. Gardner, Harvard University), and advanced methods of knowledge transfer, create a learning environment that increases the children’s abilities.  STEM, physical education, music, foreign languages, emotional education, philosophy, rhetoric, science, mathematics, and art, compose our programme.

And all this in the bilingual environment of an IB World School!

Art

ANNIE RIGA is a visual artist and educator based around Europe. She completed her BA in Fine Art at Falmouth University in the UK and then completed her master’s degree at St. Joost Academy in the Netherlands. Annie has previously run after school workshops and weekly art classes at DES school and other institutions.

The purpose of this English speaking, after-school art class programme is to awaken the student’s imagination and creativity.  The children will gain both confidence and an understanding of the visual arts while building, painting, drawing, photography and mixed media skills. These skills will be developed alongside learning about the context, style and technique of different artists and art historical movements. A weekly class will be held throughout the school year. Sessions are challenging and exciting for ages 6-12.

Through guided, hands-on art projects, students develop an eye for colour, composition and design. While mastering the fundamentals, they also learn lifelong habits regarding technique, material use and art appreciation. Throughout the year, we explore various artistic spheres, such as still life, animals, people, landscapes, and abstract concepts.

Through this wide range of themes, this class is a beginning stage for the young artists to reflect visually about current sociopolitical issues, such as the environmental crisis, world inequality and more. By the end of the year, the young artists will take home a fantastic portfolio of completed artwork which they are proud to sign, display, and share.

Theatre

MARIA POULIEZOU has graduated from the Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She is a holder of a recognized diploma from Iasmos Drama School and is currently attending the postgraduate course of Theatre Didactics, in the Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

She has completed her internship as a theatre teacher in primary schools in Athens. As an actress she has participated in various performances over the last ten years and has collaborated with the directors Alexandros Cohen and Petros Skarmeas.
In the Theatre Workshop, DES students will have the opportunity to discover theatrical techniques through hands-on experience with the body and voice as their main tools. Through theatrical play and dramatization, children will have the opportunity to interact, explore social issues, reflect, create, and understand themselves and the people around them. Our priorities are children’s dialectical communication, development of creative expression through play and improvisation, interpersonal development through the critical and reflective approach, empathy, and self-realization.

Tennis

VASIA MICHALOPOULOU — Vasia is a graduate of Physical Education and Sports Science (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), specializing in tennis. She has many years of experience in teaching tennis and her teaching method is based on trust and respect in order to allow the children to develop their abilities. The “play & stay” campaign consists of a series of programmes according to the child’s age and level. With the help of the suitable ball (red level-orange level-green level) and the use of a smaller field, the game becomes easier and the child develops a very good technique and tactics, as well as love for the sport.

Gymnastics

ELENA VALOPETROPOULOU is a senior at the School of Physical Education & Sport Science, specializing in gymnastics. She is involved in the training of gymnastics sports and was a gymnastics and acrobatic gymnastics athlete. Two sports that young children are very fond of.

Gymnastics suits young children as it can transfer the games they play at home onto the mats. It is the natural development of a child’s movements. They roll over, they run, jump, do sommersaults. Gymnastics is part of a child’s game and our training is completed in a playful way achieving the best possible results.
Both boys and girls participate in our groups and are separated according to their age. Training takes place once a week, for one hour, in the school’s indoor gym covered with special mats and with all the necessary equipment.

Team
Dr. Billie Konstantara
CEO/Founder

I was born in Germany. My father was a mechanical engineer, and my mother an interpreter of languages. From a young age, I loved to learn! I finished school in Kastella and university in Thessaloniki and Germany, where I completed my thesis at the Department of Psychology at Otto Friedrich Universität Bamberg. I have worked in the field of education since 1989. During my career, I developed an intense activity in research activities, assignments, seminars and conferences in pedagogy and psychology with a specialization in emotional and multiple intelligences. DES is the result of this long and arduous journey. DES is the school where children love to be themselves and love to learn!

Evangelia Karvouna Principal/Greek teacher

This two year old little girl is me! I completed my studies in “German Language & Literature”, but I was a restless spirit, so I continued my studies in the Pedagogical Department and today, I am a primary school teacher, a German teacher, and a principal. I love my profession, as I believe that when working with children, you are reborn. Their constant vitality is so powerful that they transmit it to you even if you don’t want to receive it. I have been in classrooms for the last 16 years, teaching all age groups. I am now conducting my postgraduate studies in Educational Psychology. The only sure thing is that since then I have been a very stylish girl! Besides, you can see this in the photo!

Kostas Konstantas Vice principal/Maths & Physics teacher

Every time I enter the classroom I think of my teacher-role model and try to copy him. I copy his movements, words, the way he attracts the students’ attention and especially what he does to make the students feel his love for teaching. My teacher-role model is not a real person! But he is the teacher I wanted to have when I was a student!!!

Pepi Karoubali Head of Administration/Philosophy teacher

When I was little, DES didn’t exist! So, while I was lively, inventive and with a great imagination, I was very oppressed at school because my teachers did not believe that these skills would be useful in life. I dreamed of becoming a flight attendant because I always liked to travel. But I also loved reading. So finally, I studied philosophy and worked as a Greek teacher for several years. My professional career led me to DES, the school that suits me the most, the school that focuses on everything I love!

Maria Anagnostopoulou Head of Greek Department

When I was little, I did two things: I pretended to be a lady in the mirror and a teacher. And I managed to achieve both! I have been a teacher for many years, and every new year, I still have the same concerns. I love literature, music, and traveling in real life and metaphorically. I believe in friendship and the power of human beings.
The children surprise me every day because their simplicity and purity remind us to respect the child we hide inside.

Iris Sofikiti Head of English Department

This is me!!! Well, this was me a few years ago. However, I am still that crazy child who likes to dance, sing, draw and play with other children! I was always full of ideas and colors, so I decided to get actively involved in Education from an early age. Before I even started University, I attended various seminars about different teaching methods! Since then, I have received two Bachelor’s degrees in Educational Policy and Primary Teaching from the University of Dundee and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership. I love teaching all ages (sometimes simultaneously) and being creative with them! My motto is that if we genuinely listen to the kids and encourage them, they will find their own way to thrive!

Paraskevi Barboutsi Head of IB

As a fetus, I was considered hyperactive. As a kid, my teachers always evaluated me as a very energetic child.
Growing up, things didn’t change much, but I came up with ways to channel my energy into something I love: literature, traveling, new experiences. Joining DES school was one of the best ideas I ever had. Passionate teachers require active, ambitious learners, and thankfully that’s the only kind of student I have ever encountered. As a teacher, I will never cease to admire the diversity and complexity of students’ personalities, learn from them, and participate in a life-changing process called learning.

Harry Vlassopoulos Head of Maths Department

Ever since I was a child, I was drawn to solving problems in the form of puzzles, games and riddles. As I grew, this interest developed into a love for mathematics and physics, where problem-solving can be applied to the real world. I wish to ignite that same spark in my students and show them the beauty of mathematics. By inspiring and instructing the next generation, I believe that we can, in our own way as teachers, make the world a better place.

Marina Armeniliou Head of Foreign Languages department

I have been a member of the DES team for the last 14 years. I am a French teacher responsible for coordinating the Department of Foreign Languages, and lately, I have also been involved in writing children’s fairy tales. My love for teaching and children led me to the field of education. Over the years, I realised that working with children in a school with a student-centred character develops you as a teacher and a person. I love to achieve behavioral and cognitive goals with children and see them develop as students and as personalities in the journey of learning foreign languages.

Eleni Fragidaki Head of P.E. Department

I still remember how excited I was about Physical Education on my first day in primary school. Of course, the P.E teacher was my favourite, and I always looked forward to our next class. Dreams do come true and a few years later, I was a Professional Volleyball Athlete with the Panathinaikos team, and I had the honour of being a member of the National Team of Greece. I love travels, music, and dance. I believe in miracles, good thoughts, and the positive energy that we can all spread around us. Today I am happy to teach children and share my knowledge and love for sports! Being on the field with children makes me feel like a small child!

Mahi Doriza Head of Music Department

In this picture, you can see my first music students! I had my dolls all set and ready for a music lesson at the age of 4.
After 38 years of playing piano and 23 of teaching music, I have to admit that when words fail, music speaks louder than anything!

Regulations

Regulations are important as they help a school establish rules and procedures and create standards of quality for learning and safety. Rules provide a sense of predictability and consistency for children, thereby promoting physical and emotional safety. Rules help guide actions toward desired results.
