Understanding Food Labels Project @ DES powered by Harvard Chan School

The information on food labels intends to help consumers become savvy about their food choices. The front, back, and sides of a package are filled with information to inform us what the food contains and to guide us in making healthier selections of processed foods.

People look at food labels for a variety of reasons. But whatever the reason, many consumers would like to know how to use this information more effectively and efficiently. The  Understanding Food Labels Project intends to make it easier for the students to use the Nutrition Facts labels to make quick, informed food decisions to help them choose a healthy diet.

EMOTIONAL EDUCATION : ANGER

One of the things a child is called to learn is how to manage his emotions – to know that the mood-emotion can change from joy to anger without the person becoming different, losing himself. So, one of the most critical conditions is recognising and managing it!

Anger is one of the most challenging and misunderstood emotions and perhaps the least tolerated.

It often has the image of an uncontrollable monster which will destroy everything if we let it free!

One of the most important “tools” for exploring anger is painting!

Through solid patterns and colours, the child gives his symbolism, discusses the thoughts around it and finally accepts his feeling, discovering ways to manage them in a possible next outburst!

Erasmus+ “Discover the World of the Tree”

POLAND – OCTOBER 2022

Following our participation in the above-mentioned mobility programme we would like to report our experience. We accompanied a group of 4 students. Our stay was 5 nights / 4 days in total. All the delegations stayed in the same hotel, including our hosts (4 students, and 2 teachers). We found this extremely beneficial to the programme’s purpose as it helped us all build a rapport and a sense of togetherness from the start.

The Jesuit school of Gdynia hosted us. The workshops we attended varied and were all related to the programme’s central idea. On the first day, as part of those workshops, we visited Marszewo forest and then the host school for two afternoon workshops. On our second day, we visited Gdansk’s Sea museum and science centre. On the third day, we visited Torun and, more specifically, the Planetarium as well as the House of Gingerbread. On our fourth day, we visited the Aquarium of Gdynia, where kids attended a workshop after spending some time looking at the exhibits. We then returned to the school for an afternoon seminal and the project summary.

All in all, we felt it was a highly educational experience for both educators and students. We managed to exchange best practices, ideas as well as resources. It has been a truly beneficial opportunity as we saw how other schools operate and discussed different educational approaches with our fellow teachers from Lithuania, Poland and Latvia. Moreover, the kids had the chance to practice their skills and knowledge whilst using English. Most importantly they met, got to know and collaborated with kids from the partner countries (Lithuania, Poland and Latvia) which was a unique and unforgettable experience as they were exposed to a different daily routine. They responded well to this and were very content by the end of the mobility programme. So were we the educators. We are confident that our newly acquired knowledge will be implemented in a positive way in our daily lessons. We look forward to hosting the programme in Greece.

Creative writing and illustration workshop : “War and Peace”

The theme of “War and Peace” was explored during the creative writing and illustration workshop, which was held for Year 1, 2,3 and 6 students. Mrs Mania Armeliniou and Mrs Annie Riga discussed with the students the content of the fairy tale “A gun that threw bubblegums!” » which was written by the students during the last school year and was awarded the first prize in the Panhellenic Competition of the Koventario Municipal Library of Kozani. Following the discussion of the book, each student captured their feelings and thoughts through the creation of personal illustrations, personalising each book and making it unique!
We believe that writing and illustration bring thoughts, ideas, and visions to fruition. They give flesh and bones to resonant social messages in an innocent yet dynamic way. We, in turn, give space and freedom of expression to the children with the hope of building a better tomorrow.

SOLAR ECLIPSE OCTOBER 25 2022

The solar eclipse is a rare astronomical event and is only visible from a limited area.

Today, on October 25, a partial Solar eclipse could be seen from Athens, and in DES, we didn’t miss that opportunity.

Apart from watching the eclipse (we used special safety glasses), we had a lesson in each class about this spectacular sight, and we played our stem-outside games using the bright light of the eclipse.

INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP 2022: TAKE PART,BECOME THE SOLUTION

Are you concerned or sad about seeing plastic and other litter on the shores and our natural environment?

About 12 million tons of plastics flow into our ocean every year. The effects have been massive for life on our planet, with scientists reporting that 800 species of animals are threatened by plastic pollution.

Plastic waste plagues even the most remote areas of our planet with rich biodiversity, from the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean, with few inhabitants, to the deepest point of the oceans, the Mariana Trench and the wildlife in the Amazon.

What can I do?
to be part of the solution to this global problem

We take action by participating in a voluntary beach cleanup

By organizing a voluntary coastal cleanup, we spread a powerful message, and we make an important additional step towards protecting our planet and keeping our seas, forests, rivers and natural environment clean.

DES @ Athens Science Festival: Worlds of tomorrow -“If the world was 100 people” Kids Lab

What would our world look like If it was a village of 100 people? Where would they be from? What language would they speak? What religion would they believe in? How many would be literate, and how many would have access to the Internet? How many would be free, and how many would have access to drinking water? In this interactive workshop, children “act” like demographers, studying the characteristics of our world’s population; they learn and discuss global social issues and cultivate their creativity by creating a living art exhibition. Learning, play, collaboration, and creativity are the key ingredients of this workshop, which aims to introduce children to the concept of global citizenship and the basic concepts of demography.
