Yoga in DES Primary School

Yoga in DES Primary School

Yoga has become an increasingly popular activity in DES schools due to its numerous benefits for children’s physical and mental well-being. Integrating yoga into the school curriculum helps promote physical fitness, enhance concentration, reduce stress, and improve emotional regulation among young students. One particular approach to yoga in schools that has gained attention is using partner yoga poses, also known as yoga shapes.

Partner Yoga Poses (Yoga Shapes)

Partner yoga poses are exercises where two students work together to create specific shapes or perform synchronized movements. These activities are not only fun but also serve several educational and developmental purposes:

  1. Teamwork and Collaboration

Partner yoga poses require students to work closely with peers, fostering a sense of teamwork and cooperation. Children must communicate effectively, synchronize their movements, and support each other to complete the poses successfully. This collaboration helps them understand the importance of working together towards a common goal, a valuable skill inside and outside the classroom.

Trust and Community Building

Engaging in partner yoga is more than just physical exercise; it’s a powerful tool for building trust and fostering a sense of community. Many poses involve balancing or leaning on one another, which requires trust and confidence in each other’s abilities. This trust-building exercise can enhance the sense of community within the class, making students feel more connected and supportive of one another.

Fun and Engagement

Partner yoga poses are not just exercises. They’re adventures in physical activity that children eagerly look forward to. The sheer joy and excitement of creating different shapes with a partner can transform yoga sessions into something truly engaging. This positive association with physical activity can inspire a lifelong habit of regular exercise in our young ones.

Physical and Emotional Benefits

Partner yoga is a holistic activity that benefits children both physically and emotionally. While engaging in partner yoga, children develop physical skills such as balance, strength, and flexibility. Additionally, these activities can have emotional benefits, including reduced anxiety and improved mood. The supportive environment of working with a partner can also help boost self-esteem and confidence.

Examples of Partner Yoga Poses

  1. Double Downward Dog: One child performs a traditional downward dog pose while the other child places their hands on the first child’s lower back and extends their legs into the air, forming an inverted ‘V’ shape together.
  2. Partner Boat Pose: Both children sit facing each other, with their knees bent and feet touching. They hold hands and lean back slightly, lifting their feet off the ground to balance only on their sitting bones, creating a ‘V’ shape with their bodies.
  3. L-Shaped Handstand: One child stands straight, and the other places their hands on the ground in front of the standing child, kicking their legs up to rest on the standing child’s hips or back, forming an ‘L’ shape.
  4. Back-to-Back Chair Pose: Partners stand back-to-back, linking arms, and slowly lower into a squat position, creating the appearance of sitting on an invisible chair while supporting each other.

Conclusion

Partner yoga poses offer a unique blend of physical exercise and social-emotional learning when incorporated into primary school education. They teach children the importance of teamwork, trust, and collaboration in a fun and engaging way. This contributes to their physical health and fosters a positive and inclusive classroom environment, helping students build strong, supportive relationships with their peers. In conclusion, partner yoga poses are a valuable addition to the primary school curriculum, promoting the overall well-being of young students.

Meditation and Knitting into DES programme

Meditation and Knitting into DES programme

Incorporating meditation and knitting into the school program can offer primary students a unique blend of mindfulness and creativity. Through meditation, students can learn valuable techniques for calming their minds, enhancing focus, and managing stress. This practice fosters emotional well-being and cultivates a positive classroom environment. Meanwhile, knitting engages their tactile senses and promotes concentration, fine motor skills, and patience. As they rhythmically loop yarn, students enter a meditative state, experiencing a profound sense of tranquillity and a rewarding sense of accomplishment. Integrating these activities significantly benefits their mental and emotional development, encouraging self-expression and problem-solving. Thus, weaving meditation and knitting into the school program can empower primary students with valuable life skills while nurturing their holistic growth.

DES: Shoreline Saviors

During Beach Cleanup Years 2-4, the indomitable spirit of young students shone brightly as they embarked on a mission to reverse the environmental harm inflicted by previous generations. Their unwavering dedication served as a beacon of hope and brought tangible results, illuminating the path towards a cleaner, healthier planet.

With boundless passion and unwavering enthusiasm, these young environmental stewards ventured onto beaches armed with gloves, bags, and determination. They tirelessly combated pollution, picking up litter piece by piece. Their efforts led to a significant reduction in plastic waste and a restoration of the coastline’s natural beauty, one cleanup at a time.

What truly distinguished these students was their actions and deep-seated love for the world around them. Their actions were not borne out of duty but out of a profound love for the environment and a keen awareness of its vulnerability. Every plastic bottle collected and every piece of debris removed was a testament to their commitment to safeguarding the Earth for future generations.

Their efforts deserve not just applause but also emulation. In a world grappling with unprecedented environmental challenges, the example set by these young volunteers is a stark reminder of the power of collective action. Their initiative, resilience, and compassion should inspire us and empower us all to step up and become stewards of our planet for the sake of our shared future.

As we reflect on Beach Cleanup Years 2-4, let us not only celebrate the achievements of these remarkable young people but also heed the call to join them in their noble endeavours. Together, we can create a brighter, cleaner future for all living beings, guided by the invaluable lessons taught by the youth who lead by example.

Forest fire protection instructions and fire drills at DES school

At DES Primary School, nestled amidst the serene embrace of nature, the routine tranquillity was momentarily interrupted by the shrill sound of the fire alarm. Accustomed to the harmonious melodies of chirping birds and rustling leaves, students swiftly transitioned into a well-rehearsed drill. The children formed orderly lines with teachers guiding them, their youthful faces reflecting curiosity and caution. As they streamed out of the classrooms, the verdant surroundings echoed with the shuffling of feet and the distant hum of instructions. Under the expansive canopy of trees, the school community gathered at the designated assembly point, patiently awaiting further directions. Despite the unexpected interruption, the spirit of camaraderie and safety prevailed, a testament to the school’s preparedness and harmonious coexistence with the natural world.

DES at the Industrial Educational Museum in Lavrio

We visited the Technical-Industrial Museum of Lavrio and had the opportunity to explore the fascinating world of mines.
Our students immersed themselves in the history of ore mining, learning about the challenges and successes that came with this ancient art. A series of fun activities ensued as our little explorers transformed into chemists!
We performed experiments that helped us discover the characteristics of various minerals, such as their volume, colour, and hardness. It was a unique opportunity for our students to put their knowledge into practice and develop their curiosity about the world of science and technology.
