How to be an ARTist Lab – DES KINDERGARTEN

Pablo Picasso:” It took me my whole life to learn to draw like a child!”

Teaching art to preschoolers is like handing them a magic wand to navigate the wild and wacky world of crayons, glue, and glitter. Sure, we could focus on essential life skills like reading, math, and basic survival tactics, but have you ever tried to decipher the intricate symbolism of a finger-painted masterpiece? Preschool art class is where future Picassos are born, and our little prodigies can boldly declare that they will not conform to a world of “inside the lines” thinking. So, let’s embrace the whimsical chaos of preschool art class and let those tiny artists run wild, creating masterpieces that will leave us in awe and a little bit baffled. Who needs a world of straight lines when you can have a rainbow-coloured squiggle, right?

“Hymettus Walk” by Spyros Υεαρ 5

We went to a mountain with firefighters, my parents and friends from Des and it was amazing! We also saw wild animals like horses and turtles. We learned about fires and how we can prevent fires. Also, we learned how important it is to keep our environment safe. It was an amazing feeling as we explored caves and other parts of the mountain. The views were awesome and everyone loved it. I hope that we can go there more often and make more memories with friends. Thank the EDNY and the school for bringing us to the Hymettus mountain walk.

“The Adventure of Hymettus” by Amalia Year 3

On the way to Mount Hymettus, we were stopped by a bunch of horses. So we approached them and had to gently push the horses off the road. Once we made it to the mountain, we took in the views as we waited for the others to arrive.

When everyone arrived we started our journey on the mountain, not knowing what we were going to encounter. So as we climbed up to the mountain after 5 minutes we saw a turtle that was very cute and gentle.

After we went and explored an amazing cave and saw a river inside the cave. It was so cool and worth going to the amazing mountain of Hymettus. Thank you so much, mr Spiro and his team and our school for organizing this. We learned so much about nature and fires.

Explorers and seafarers: Messages in bottles full of mystery and adventure #YEAR5

Explorers and seafarers: Messages in bottles full of mystery and adventure

Year 5 has successfully wrapped up its summative project! Following their research on renowned explorers and crafting imaginative letters that blend facts and fiction, our Year Five students have successfully concluded their initial IB unit, centred on seafarers and explorers. To mark the end of this project, they placed their weathered-looking letters inside glass jars, setting the stage for a treasure hunt within the school grounds. Ultimately, the “treasure” turned out to be the glass jars themselves, found floating in the school pond, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the St2 group, who skillfully retrieved the messages from the water-filled bottles.! Year 5 students also had the opportunity to present all the above to their senior group, which offered opportunities for reflection to both groups.

DES in on air…

Des is on air… Radio on the happy island of Rab in Croatia: where the waves of connection and the rhythm of voices harmonize to create a symphony of stories, emotions, and inspiration, painting the canvas of our partnership.

DES loves nature

“DES loves nature! Raising awareness of environment protection and supporting our IB principles of “Sharing the Planet”, DES was treated today by The Voluntary Forest Protection of South Ymittos (EDNY). This independent, non-profit organization devotes its time to protecting South Hymettus Mountain’s natural environment and ecosystem. We learnt about the flora, fauna, insects, and animals that live on the mountain and the good works these volunteers do, as well as being a “fireman” and seeing a fire truck up close. Thank you, EDNY!

Tag der Deutschen Einheit – 3. Oktober 2023

33 Jahre Deutsche Einheit

Clay Workshop @ DES “Σείστρο”, an ancient musical instrument

Having workshops with clay is essential for DES students for several reasons. First and foremost, working with clay fosters creativity and self-expression. It allows students to mould and shape their ideas into tangible forms, promoting artistic exploration and innovation. Additionally, clay workshops promote tactile learning, improving fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. They also encourage patience and perseverance as students learn to work through the challenges of manipulating a malleable medium.

Furthermore, clay workshops provide a unique sensory experience, engaging multiple senses and enhancing memory retention. These workshops offer a well-rounded educational experience that nurtures artistic skills, cognitive development, and a deeper appreciation for the arts. Students of Grade A create their clay structure, “Σείστρο”, an ancient musical instrument!
