The World of Natural Disasters Project @ DES

What a fantastic week in Year 1! Our English and Greek teachers teamed up to explore the world of natural disasters with us.

In English, we dove into thrilling stories like “Birdie and the Flood” and “Birdie and the Wildfire.” Then, we let our creativity flow as we drew our favourite characters and scenes from the tales. To top it all off, we presented our picture books in our groups, marking our first presentation in English class. What a milestone!

In Greek class, we watched captivating videos and discussed natural disasters. And the best part? On Friday, we became mini-scientists and learned how lava creates volcanic eruptions through a hands-on experiment. What a blast!

Our week was full of adventure, learning, and fun. Who knew natural disasters could be so intriguing?

Peer Μentorship Project @ DES

We finally did it! All grades 1,2,3 have a school big brother/big sister with an overwhelming percentage of volunteers from grades 4,5,6 as part of their leadership training. The outpouring of love was tremendous, and watching them bond during the breaks was very rewarding ❤️!

Peer mentorship plays a crucial role in preventing bullying in primary schools for several compelling reasons:

  1. Positive Role Models: Peer mentors often serve as positive role models for younger students. When younger children see their peers displaying kindness, empathy, and respectful behaviour, they are likelier to emulate those behaviours, creating a culture of respect and tolerance.
  2. Safe and Approachable: Younger students may find it easier to approach their peers for help or guidance than adults. Peer mentors create a safe and approachable environment where victims of bullying feel comfortable discussing their experiences and seeking support.
  3. Building Empathy: Peer mentors can help cultivate empathy among their peers by teaching them to understand and relate to the feelings and experiences of others. By fostering empathy, bullying becomes less socially acceptable, and more students stand up against it.
  4. Conflict Resolution: Peer mentors often receive training in conflict resolution skills. They can help mediate conflicts and misunderstandings, providing practical solutions that prevent disputes from escalating into bullying situations.
  5. Inclusivity and Acceptance: Peer mentors can promote inclusivity by encouraging their peers to accept differences and celebrate diversity. Children who feel accepted for their identity are less likely to target others for being different.
  6. Increased Awareness: Peer mentors can raise awareness about the negative consequences of bullying, both for the victim and the perpetrator. By educating their peers about the harmful effects of bullying, they can discourage such behaviour.
  7. Peer Accountability: Knowing that their peers disapprove of bullying can deter potential bullies. Peer mentors can help create a culture where students hold each other accountable for their actions, making bullying less likely to go unnoticed or unaddressed.
  8. Confidential Support: Younger students may be more comfortable confiding in peer mentors about their experiences with bullying, knowing that the information will be kept confidential and that they will not face judgment.
  9. Promotion of Positive Values: Peer mentorship programs often emphasize kindness, respect, and compassion. These values are directly opposed to bullying behaviours, and when instilled in a school’s culture, they reduce the prevalence of bullying.

In conclusion, peer mentorship in primary schools can be a powerful tool for preventing bullying by creating a supportive, empathetic, and inclusive environment where students learn to respect and care for one another. Through the guidance and example of their peers, children are more likely to embrace healthy relationships and reject bullying behaviours.

Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival 2023 @ DES

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is a traditional festival celebrated in Chinese culture. Other cultures in East and Southeast Asia celebrate similar holidays.

It is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture; its popularity is on par with that of Chinese New Year. The history of the Mid-Autumn Festival dates back over 3,000 years. The festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar with a full moon at night, corresponding to mid-September to early October of the Gregorian calendar.

On this day, the Chinese believe that the Moon is at its brightest and most total size, coinciding with harvest time in the middle of Autumn.

Lanterns of all sizes and shapes – which symbolize beacons that light people’s path to prosperity and good fortune – are carried and displayed throughout the festival. Mooncakes, a rich pastry typically filled with sweet bean, egg yolk, meat or lotus-seed paste, are traditionally eaten during this festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival is based on the legend of Chang’e, the Moon goddess in Chinese mythology.

“Creative Writing and Illustration Workshop”

The action of the “Creative Writing and Illustration Workshop” in collaboration with the “Miles and Soul” Program was completed today in the Primary classes.

The children came into contact with the magical world of writing by adding their own touches to the development of the story.

Then, they were inspired and captured it in the illustration frame that each book had.

The theme of friendship was a motivation for discussion … ideas were formulated & sketches were drawn … in a unique way as the children express themselves with spontaneity and endless positive energy.

The principle of diversity was verified at the end of the action as the same text was a source of inspiration for different illustrations. Let’s not forget that each student is unique as well as the way he expresses himself.

Writing and illustrating are an occasion for free expression, there is no right or wrong or specific norm… thus we are given the opportunity to get even closer to the children’s world and to communicate with them deeper and better.

Well done to all of you!

The Enigma of Identity -MYP

The Enigma of Identity Who am I? What defines my identity? What makes each of us unique yet connected? For our first project, we explored these profound inquiries with curiosity to understand what sets us apart and brings us together. To visualize these inquiries, students used the scans of their fingerprints to portray themselves through a creative illustration.

Mitumba: Educational programme about the visual arts installation “Return to Sender”

Where are our clothes made? How do they get to us? Where do they travel? Where do they end up when we are done using them? Through creative games, activities and constructions, we discover the answers to the questions mentioned above, approach the concept of sustainability, and become aware of our share of individual responsibility for the future of our planet. Taking our cue from the large-scale outdoor installation “Return to Sender” by the African art collective NEST, we trace a piece of clothing’s long journey from the country where it was manufactured to the SNFCC, where it ended up in our hands. At the end of the program, we chose among the fabrics left behind for us by the artists who created the installation and came up with our artistic creations!
