Great Music Composers Project : IANNIS XENAKIS -YEAR 5 @ Athens Concert Hall

In the project of getting acquainted with great music composers, the year 5 students visited the Athens Concert Hall music library on Friday, 3/2. They had a unique opportunity to meet pleasantly and interactively one of the most influential composers of the 20th century, Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001), who experimented with computers many years before children discovered them! The programme included a treasure hunt in the Library, a narration with slides and music, and games about Xenakis’ life and works. It concluded the composition the children made using the composition programme UPISketch, developed by the Iannis Xenakis centre in collaboration with the European University of Cyprus.

This activity is part of ‘Meta-Xenakis’ in the context of the international celebration of the 100 years since the birth of Iannis Xenakis.

Iannis Xenakis was a Greek-French composer and architect. He is considered one of the most important 20th-century composers, combining traditional and modern elements. He is best known for his groundbreaking compositions for electronic instruments and his use of mathematics and musical architecture.

Born in 1922 in Romania, Xenakis was forced to flee with his family from the Nazis during World War II. He eventually settled in Paris, where he studied engineering and architecture. He was particularly interested in the mathematical principles behind structures and eventually began to apply these principles to his compositions. He developed his unique style of composition, which blended traditional music with modern techniques and technology.

Xenakis was a prolific composer and his works have been performed throughout the world. He was the first composer to use computers to create music and wrote influential essays on musical composition. His influence on modern musical composition is undeniable, and his works continue to inspire composers today. He passed away in 2001, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and creative genius.

FEBRUARY 9: Celebrating International Greek Language Day @ DES

February 9 has officially been declared as International Greek Language Day and is a day for Greeks and non-Greeks to celebrate the vital role the Greek language has played in world culture.

The Greek language and culture, spread over 35 centuries, provide an unbroken link between modern-day Greeks and their ancestors.

Unlike Latin, Greek is a living language currently spoken by more than 11 million people in mainland Greece and several million Greeks worldwide.

We must all realise that Greek and Chinese are the only languages spoken today whose origin was known more than 3,500 years ago.”

Adrados acknowledges the role of languages of the ancient world, such as Egyptian, Sumerian, Hebrew and Arabic. However, if judged on the influence exerted over other European languages, he said: “Greek is the first language in the world. The Greek language is alive in Greece and has a second life; its alphabet, vocabulary, syntax and literature are present in all languages.”

February 9 has been selected as the day to celebrate the Greek language because it coincides with the Commemoration Day of Greece’s “national poet” Dionysios Solomos.

This initiative aims to highlight the fundamental role played by the Greek language in world culture throughout the centuries and encourage the Greeks of the diaspora and anyone who wishes to get involved and learn about Greek culture, to systematically research and learn about it.

Happy International Greek Language Day!

DES supports our fellow humans in need!

At DES, we don’t just teach values; we act! The most difficult times are when we must respond promptly and generously. Because our culture is judged by our attitude towards fellow human beings, friends, neighbours, and the distressed. Humanity is more united than divided because we are all equal when we face the unexpected. As human beings, we will stand by our fellow humans, the Turkish people that were hit by the earthquake. We ask for your support as we will collect long-life food, milk, pasta, rice, etc., as well as blankets and personal hygiene products to help the Hellenic Red Cross’s effort to send the necessary items to the people in need. The first delivery will take place on Friday, 17/2. Please send your items to the school by Thursday, 16/2, and we will send them to the Hellenic Red Cross assembly points. The delivery of the items will continue on other dates.

ALL ABOUT DINOSAURS PROJECT @ DESjunior

The theme of dinosaurs can spark conversions around difficult and complex topics such as time, history, death/extinction, evolution and environmental issues. They teach children that we do not know everything about our world—humans are still learning and exploring.

Dinosaurs were the main animals on Earth for more than 150 million years. They were lizardlike reptiles. Some were the most significant and scariest creatures ever walking on land.

Of course, at δες junior, we were unafraid and learned everything about dinosaurs!

International Holocaust Remembrance Day @ DES

27/1 International Holocaust Remembrance Day

The holocaust is one of the darkest chapters in human history. It was a systematic-sponsored persecution and murder of millions of Jews, Roma, disabled people and others by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during World War Two.

DES pupils watched videos, read stories and played quizzes which were a reminder of the cruelty and inhumanity of which humans are capable. Through all these activities, we reminded ourselves of the importance of standing up for justice and human rights and speaking out against hatred and racism. Ultimately, we all concluded that we must never allow such atrocities to happen again.

Christmas @ DES

This week we experienced our Christmas Celebrations! Because at DES, we live our moments, with passion, with fun and with all our soul. Our celebrations are not well-calculated moments, flawless appearances and formal displays of recitation. They are alive, have the personal stamp and care of all of us, and are from our hearts!! We wish you happy holidays, holidays like our school.

Parents of DES celebrated their Xmas Mingle event on 12-16 Dec 2022 by showing love and thanks and helping those in need. Parents generously supported SPAZ by raising €931 and collected numerous second-hand toys and books for the Panhellenic Union of Friends of Multi-Child Families! Children and parents feasted on homemade cookies and cakes and jointly created Christmas crafts for take-home memories!
