Archaeostoryteller Theodoros Papakostas at DES

We sincerely thank Archaeostoryteller, the author of the best-selling books on archaeology, Theodoros Papakostas, for the interview he granted us. We talked about his book, which we used in the context of the history lesson; we commented on all the elements that make archaeology attractive nowadays, while he was also asked to answer the difficult questions of the DES students about the work of the archaeologist, the writing, its antiquity and its importance for the self-awareness of modern man. Ultimately, he congratulated the students for their level of knowledge and interest in getting to know the archaeologist-scientist and the archaeologist-human up close.

Black History Month @ DES

Black History Month

#year4

Black History Month is an annual celebration of African-American history and contributions to the formation of the modern US.

Black History Month 2024-Art as a Platform for Social Justice

African American artists — poets, writers, visual artists, and dancers — have historically been change agents through their crafts.

Drawn from their ancestors’ ancient rites of passage and the shared hopes of liberty, Black artists continue fusing creative expressions’ rhythmic cadence with the pulsating beats of progress. Our #4th_graders celebrate Black History Month 2024 by highlighting the “art of resistance” and the artists who used their crafts to uplift the race, speak truth to power and inspire a nation.

We also put yummy toppings like syrup, chocolate chips, or fruit on them. It is like a pancake party! Pancake Day is also called Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent starts. So, we eat pancakes to use up all the good stuff in our kitchen before Lent when we give up some things. It is a happy day filled with tasty treats!

The children prepared a presentation about the life and work of Leonardo da Vinci and, through voice comments, described the idea’s conception and the successful design of two fantastic inventions that forever changed the concept of flight step by step.

The kids used digital multimedia tools such as Voicethread during the group project.

Knitting lab @Des

The introduction of the knitting workshop into our school programme offers numerous benefits for our young students. Beyond the joy of creating handmade objects, knitting fosters fundamental skills such as fine motor coordination, patience, and concentration. The tactile nature of working with yarn and needles also enhances sensory development. Additionally, knitting promotes a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem as students witness the tangible results of their efforts. In a workshop setting, children can collaborate, share ideas, and develop social skills, creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Furthermore, the workshop encourages creativity and imagination, allowing students to explore various colors and designs and fostering a lifelong appreciation for the art of handicrafts. Overall, this workshop introduces a valuable skill and nurtures holistic development in a fun and exciting way.

Endemic species in Greek nature: Skyrian horses

Endemic species in Greek nature: Skyrian horses

The Skyrian horse: Sociable, intelligent, friendly

The Skyrian horse is an ancient Greek breed that has survived only in Skyros! Nowadays, it has around 190 members on the island and 300 worldwide. It is a small-sized breed unique worldwide, scientifically known as Equus caballus Skyriano.

Skyrian horses are related to the miniature horses of Pindos Mountain in Greece and are historically tied to the horses used by Achilles during his expedition to Troy and to the horses of Alexander the Great. Moreover, Skyrian horses are said to be depicted on the Parthenon frieze.

The miniature horses of Skyros are related to small-sized horse breeds that migrated to Europe from Alaska, crossing the mountainous regions of Asia 12,000 years ago!

The breed that developed into the modern-day Skyrian horse is rumoured to descend from horses brought to Skyros by Athenian settlers during the 5th century BCE.

Although Skyrian horses are often referred to as “ponies” or “hipparions” (meaning little horses in Greek), they are not closely related. Hipparions were small-sized, three-toed horses that went extinct around 1,000,000 years ago and are a different breed.

Talking about love @ DES (14.2.2024)

Although it may seem like this day is mainly aimed at adults, elementary school students also have a lot to say and share about what love means to them. For many young students, Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to express love to their friends and family. Classrooms are filled with smiles and joy as students exchange cards and small gifts to show how important they are to each other. Love can be expressed in many ways: helping a classmate in need and showing respect and kindness to our teacher and classmates.

Year4’s message for all:

“February 14th… day of love? No…

To us, it is more like a

Reminder alarm-day

We should celebrate love every day! ”
