Women of the World Festival : Experiential workshop Synai-no Year 6 @ SNFCC

From the 1st to the 3rd of April, 2023, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center presents the first WOW – Women of the World Festival in Greece. The festival cooperates with the UK-based WOW Foundation, the world’s largest event dedicated to women, girls and non-binary people. The WOW Foundation was founded by Jude Kelly in 2010, when the first WOW Festival occurred at Southbank Centre, London. Since then, WOW Foundation has organized festivals and events in more than 30 cities across six continents, attracting 5 million people.

WOW, Athens, presented in Greece in cooperation with the British Council and with the support of the British Embassy Athens, includes speeches by Greek and foreign guests, discussions, exhibitions, workshops, mentoring sessions, educational programs, concerts, and much more, in an ambitious event aiming to empower women and feminities in tackling the barriers and inequalities they encounter daily, and celebrate the victories won to date as well as the people behind them and their inspiring stories. Diverse and interdisciplinary, the festival focuses on present-day Greek reality, while also looking at shared concerns and challenges from across the globe.

Our students of the 6th grade of Des participated actively in the experiential workshop “Sinai/no” at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. It is an independent educational activity of an experiential nature about consent, self-determination and physical autonomy.

In the first stage, the children explored the multidimensional concept of consent. They familiarized themselves with it, defined it and co-shaped it with the support of the animators.

Then, through games, the group practised exchanging consent in participatory activities and ways of expressing “yes” and “no”.

In closing, the participants individually created their own consensual greetings board, which promotes the values of consent.”

“Forced labour and immigration” by Stephanie Bratnick

Stephanie Bratnick, a human rights expert, presented to the 5th and 6th grades on forced labour and immigration. Students learned how forced labour happens, how immigrants may be at risk for exploitation, and how to end forced labour.

The Definition of forced labour

“all work or service which is exacted from any person under the threat of a penalty and for which the person has not offered himself or herself voluntarily.”

Doves of freedom
In honour of Greek Revolution Day, our 4th graders have created doves adorned with the powerful poem “Thourios” from Riga Feraio. These doves represent freedom, peace, and the bravery of the Greek people who fought for independence. Doves have been a symbol of freedom and peace for centuries, and their association with these ideals can be traced back to ancient times. In many cultures, doves are seen as a symbol of the divine, and their gentle and peaceful nature has come to represent hope, purity, and innocence.

St. Patrick’s Day and Red Nose day @ DES

As we aim for our kids to become citizens of the world, we like exploring different customs and traditions. Today is a double celebration for our school, as we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day and Red Nose day, too! As part of St. Patrick’s Day, we danced to the Irish tunes, drew shamrocks and rainbows and wore something green – so the leprechauns would not pinch any of us – Apart from something green, we also put on our red noses for the Red Nose Day!

Red Nose Day is an annual fundraising campaign to end the cycle of child poverty and ensure a healthy future for all children. Through the power of entertainment, we bring people together to laugh and have fun while raising money and awareness to ensure all children are safe, healthy, educated, and empowered.

Des School organised a fundraising event with activities arranged by our Year 5 kids. Along with their teachers, they ensured that all the kids in our school had fun and money was raised for a good cause. We collected 950€. The funds will be given to “Floga – Parents Association of Children with Cancer” Greece.

We would like to wholeheartedly thank all the parents and children in our school who actively contributed to this event! Our school will keep focusing on our children’s emotional growth and empathy through charities and other events!
