DES Wins IB Global Youth Action Fund Award for Second Year in a Row: Turning compassion into action… and ideas into real impact

DES Wins IB Global Youth Action Fund Award for Second Year in a Row: Turning compassion into action… and ideas into real impact

The IB Global Youth Action Fund is more than a grant. It is a global movement empowering young changemakers to transform courage, creativity and purpose into meaningful action aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Across the world, young people are stepping forward to shape a better future… and our students are among them.

We are incredibly proud to share that our Middle School students, Ino Pariarou and Angelina Drosou, have been selected as winners of this year’s IB Global Youth Action Fund. Their inspiring project, “Foods to Hope”, aims to collect surplus food from restaurants and redistribute it to people in need within the community, turning empathy into tangible support and hope into action.

This remarkable achievement reflects not only their vision and leadership, but also the power of youth to create real, sustainable change. Even more proudly, this marks the second consecutive year that  DES students have been awarded this global distinction.

Our students don’t wait for the future—they create it.

Designing Voices: Women Who Shape the World Through Architecture

Designing Voices: Women Who Shape the World Through Architecture

On International Women’s Day, students at DES Middle School explored architecture through the work of three remarkable women who have shaped how we understand and experience the built world.

Architecture meets intuition, empathy, harmony, and bold creativity. Through the work of Zaha Hadid, Lina Bo Bardi, and Keti Dialeisma, our students discovered three powerful architectural visions and three distinct ways of thinking about space, society, and design.

Zaha Hadid revolutionised architecture with daring forms, dynamic curves, and sharp angles that challenged traditional design, as seen in the iconic Vitra Fire Station in Germany. Lina Bo Bardi reimagined the relationship among architecture, nature, and human life through projects such as the celebrated Glass House in São Paulo, where interior and exterior exist in seamless dialogue. In Greece, Keti Dialeisma, through her work on the EOT Pavilion in Eretria within the visionary Xenia program, demonstrated how simplicity, clarity of form, and harmony with the landscape can define modern architectural identity.

Through research, discussion, and the construction of architectural models, students experienced architecture not only as a structure but as a cultural expression, a set of choices, and a way of seeing the world.

The most meaningful message of International Women’s Day is not only to remember the names of those who have shaped our world, but to actively recognise creative voices, especially those that have been overlooked. By doing so, we can inspire new generations to approach the future with imagination, courage, and vision.

DES Madrid 2026 | Education Without Borders

DES Madrid 2026 | Education Without Borders
The DES educational journey to Madrid began with a historic milestone in the international development of our school. The first and most significant moment was the official signing of a Cooperation Agreement with Nuestra Señora de las Victorias School within the framework of the International Cultural Exchange Educational Programme, inaugurating a new era of student exchanges, collaborative initiatives and meaningful intercultural cooperation between the two school communities.
A particularly honourable and deeply symbolic highlight of the visit was our reception at the Embassy of Greece in Madrid, where the Ambassador of Greece, Mr Apostolos Baltas, and the Consul, Ms Mirella Roufani, welcomed the school delegation to Spain. Students had the unique opportunity to experience diplomacy firsthand, engage in discussions about Greece’s international presence, and participate in an authentic lesson in active citizenship, European identity and global awareness, understanding how education and culture act as powerful bridges between nations.
Spanish Week 2026 unfolded as a comprehensive experiential learning experience. Students explored Madrid through a panoramic tour of its iconic landmarks, visits to major art and contemporary cultural museums, historical walking tours and cultural activities that connected history, art, technology and society. The days spent at the partner school formed the heart of the exchange programme, as students participated in shared lessons, creative workshops and cultural experiences, building genuine international friendships and collaborations.
The journey to Madrid became an experience of growth, independence, and global orientation, reaffirming that at DES, education goes beyond borders and becomes a living experience of life itself.

Carnival 2026 @ DES: When Tradition Becomes Living Learning

Carnival at DES: When Tradition Becomes Living Learning
Carnival at DES Primary and Secondary School transformed into a vibrant learning experience where tradition, creativity, and social interaction coexisted as a dynamic laboratory of culture. The festive season went beyond mere celebration. It became a meaningful exploration of identity, symbolism, and collective expression, highlighting how societies throughout time have used disguise and ritual as powerful tools to renegotiate social roles, awaken imagination, and strengthen the sense of community and belonging.
By connecting cultural heritage with experiential education, DES once again demonstrated that knowledge gains true meaning when it is lived, expressed, and shared collectively, allowing students not only to celebrate Carnival but also to deeply understand its timeless human, historical, and cultural significance.

Many Languages One Heart | International Mother Language Day @ DES

Many Languages One Heart | International Mother Language Day @ DES
In our Greek as a Foreign Language class, we celebrated the beauty of linguistic diversity through experiences that honoured every child’s voice and identity. Students created their own multilingual mini dictionary, translating meaningful words into their mother tongues and discovering that language is far more than communication. It carries memories, emotions, culture, and a sense of belonging.
Together, we designed a classroom poster with the flags of all the countries represented in our community, a powerful reminder that although our journeys begin in different places, learning brings us together. The celebration concluded with students recording a video in which they spoke proudly in their native languages, sharing a living piece of who they are with confidence and joy.
On International Mother Language Day, we celebrated more than languages. We celebrated stories, heritage and the richness that diversity brings into our classroom every single day. Because when children feel heard in their own language, they feel truly seen.

STREET ART @ DES #Year6 MYP1 Summative Assessment – Arts

In this summative assessment, students immersed themselves in the world of street art through a carefully curated selection of iconic graffiti works, approaching them not merely as images but as powerful voices expressing social realities, human stories, and the hopes of a city. Each artwork became a starting point for dialogue, inviting students to look closely and thoughtfully at symbols, colours, figures, expressions, and settings, and to interpret the message they believed the artist intended to communicate, as well as how this message reached the viewer.
Through reflective discussion and personal engagement, students explored the emotions each artwork evoked in them, from joy and hope to sadness, anger, admiration, or quiet reflection. They identified the specific visual elements that triggered these feelings and connected them to their own thoughts, experiences, and perspectives, demonstrating sensitivity and emotional awareness. To conclude, each student proposed an alternative title for the artwork that captured the meaning they had discovered and expressed their own authentic creative voice.
This process strengthened students’ visual literacy and their ability to read art with empathy, justify interpretations with evidence, and understand street art as a form of dialogue rather than decoration. Above all, it highlighted how art in public spaces can carry messages of resistance, connection, and hope, giving voice to individuals and communities alike.

HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY | 27 JANUARY @ DES | YEAR 6

HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY | 27 JANUARY @ DES | YEAR 6

Today, we paused to remember the Holocaust with respect, responsibility, and empathy. We did not choose fear or shocking images. We chose understanding. We talked about what happens when people lose their rights, their voice, and their safety, and what this means for us today, here and now.

Memory is not only about the past. It is a way to learn how to recognise exclusion, racism, and injustice, even when they appear quietly, through small everyday actions. As part of our activity, we created a “Memory Suitcase” with five small symbolic objects representing identity, family, hope, the future, and courage.

For us, memory leads to responsibility. We remember so we can act with respect, protect human dignity, and have the courage to speak up when we see injustice. We remember so that we can act. We remember to protect human dignity today.
