Designing Voices: Women Who Shape the World Through Architecture

Designing Voices: Women Who Shape the World Through Architecture

On International Women’s Day, students at DES Middle School explored architecture through the work of three remarkable women who have shaped how we understand and experience the built world.

Architecture meets intuition, empathy, harmony, and bold creativity. Through the work of Zaha Hadid, Lina Bo Bardi, and Keti Dialeisma, our students discovered three powerful architectural visions and three distinct ways of thinking about space, society, and design.

Zaha Hadid revolutionised architecture with daring forms, dynamic curves, and sharp angles that challenged traditional design, as seen in the iconic Vitra Fire Station in Germany. Lina Bo Bardi reimagined the relationship among architecture, nature, and human life through projects such as the celebrated Glass House in São Paulo, where interior and exterior exist in seamless dialogue. In Greece, Keti Dialeisma, through her work on the EOT Pavilion in Eretria within the visionary Xenia program, demonstrated how simplicity, clarity of form, and harmony with the landscape can define modern architectural identity.

Through research, discussion, and the construction of architectural models, students experienced architecture not only as a structure but as a cultural expression, a set of choices, and a way of seeing the world.

The most meaningful message of International Women’s Day is not only to remember the names of those who have shaped our world, but to actively recognise creative voices, especially those that have been overlooked. By doing so, we can inspire new generations to approach the future with imagination, courage, and vision.
