Teachers are not supposed to teach only grammar, vocabulary, or already planned lessons.
They need to raise awareness on several social and political issues. Our children wanted to learn more about what is happening in Europe and the war between Ukraine and Russia.
So, the least we could do was to talk about it.
“Miss, why should people kill each other?”
“But why are people so greedy?”
“What will happen to all those kids? I heard that they are hiding.”
These were just a few of their thoughts. We had long talks. We wrote letters to send to the kids in Ukraine, letters to send to the presidents of both countries, and posters to show empathy and advocate for peace. We also sang two of our favourite songs:
Well…as John Lenon sang “Imagine there are no countries It isn’t hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion, too Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world.”
